I like running across books about celebrities who have been or less left behind by popular culture It seems like they would have lives just as interesting to hear about as the big stars did But sometimes, that s not the case Bolger will never be completely forgotten as long as The Wizard of Oz remains popular as the subtitle of the book indicates, Bolger was the Scarecrow, everyone s favorite Oz movie character But as his most important work was done for Broadway in the 30s, 40s and 50s, there is no record his most iconic performances The stage musical for which he won a Tony, Where s Charley , was filmed but it has never been released to TV or home video, and I suspect if it was made available, his performance would seem like a novelty than a career best role This book is well written and has been deeply researched, but given that most of Bolger s contemporaries are gone, we don t get much first hand reportage, though the author was given access to Bolger s archives and makes good use of some of his own writing But ultimately, he doesn t fully come to life on these pages Some of that is certainly due to the fact that he didn t live large he seems to have been a quiet family man the author hints at some marital troubles here and there they had no children, and she was frustrated living in his shadow but is unable to delve deeply into those issues and avoided getting involved in public controversies Despite this being a solid and non sensationalist biography, I d only recommend it for die hard fans or people who already have some background in vaudeville and theater.

Thoroughly and delightfully researched It s clear that the author is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject and time period There s excellent context included on the vaudeville world and evolution of Hollywood and film that shaped Ray Bolger s life and career trajectory It was so fascinating to learn about the opportunities and circumstances that caused Bolger to be a beloved entertainer but not quite as famous as some of his contemporaries It s incredible how it has taken so long for a biography of Bolger to come out, but the pieces fell together quite perfectly for Van Leuvan to make the first attempt, due to her ambition and dedication, and she created a marvelous tribute to Bolger s life and legacy.

I have been a fan of Ray Bolger since 2007 when I first watched WOz, but I was always unable to find out much information on his life I am glad the author decided to search his life and talk to the few people still alive that have known Ray somehow to write this book and put his legacy on paper Besides all it was really nice to know how Bolger was as a husband and as a person and see know who he was off screen If you are a fan of old Hollywood musicals and theater this is a good book to learn about XX century Broadway, the early Hollywood movie industry and the revolution of TV.
